Artist’s Statement

Photography has become an integral part of my life over the years. The camera is a tool that allows me to express things that I simply cannot communicate any other way. I have always believed in the power of art to sustain and inspire the human spirit.

Most of my work is related to the people and region here I live in Southeastern Ohio. The landscape in the Hocking Hills Region is alive with spirits and energy from the past. From unique geological formations to traces of earlier cultures it is an exciting environment. Some of my images are an attempt to comment on our vital and primal connection to the earth. Other work is more traditional and includes environmental portraiture and landscapes.

Technically I enjoy the classic look of black and white and I prefer having full control of the process from beginning to end. My work is printed on fiber paper (darkroom) and is of archival quality or it is printed with archival inks from an Epson printer. I love the medium and feel grateful to have photography as a creative tool. I also feel privileged to live in the Hocking Hills, which is a rich and inspiring place to work. I remain in continued debt to those who allow my camera to work its magic.
